Yamaya Japanese Wagyu & Grill
About This Spot
Stepping into Yamaya Japanese Wagyu & Grill, you’re greeted by a softly lit, intimate space that invites a slower pace — one that encourages both appreciation and interaction. It's the kind of spot where the subtle aroma of grilling meat mingles comfortably with quiet conversations, creating a warm backdrop to your meal. This is not a hurried rush of flavors but a gathering place that feels grounded in the ritual of yakiniku, where the experience unfolds as you carefully cook each bite over charcoal.
The atmosphere strikes a balance between casual and thoughtful, a neighborhood gem anchored by friendly, attentive service that knows the value of letting the evening stretch just enough. While the dining room hums quietly with shared moments and the gentle sizzle of the grill, there’s a lingering, authentic sense of community — a space where both newcomers and regulars come with clear expectations of quality and connection.
Central to Yamaya’s charm is the hands-on nature of the meal itself. The joy lies in selecting premium cuts of Wagyu and Washugyu, each with its distinctive marbling and depth, and grilling them slowly to unlock their richness. It’s a pace that invites you to savor not only the beautifully tender meats but also the small accompaniments that refresh the palate — from crisp housemade pickles to subtly dressed salads. The experience extends beyond food, with thoughtfully chosen wines and sake complementing the savory layers on the grill, lending a quiet sophistication without pretense.
The convivial yet settled mood encourages sharing and conversation, making it clear this is as much about the human moment as it is the meal itself. Whether you’re indulging in a set meant for leisurely exploration or ordering hot pot favorites that bubble gently at your table, the rhythm here is unhurried, helping you rediscover the pleasure in cooking your own food, bite by gratifying bite.
Yamaya’s location offers convenience wrapped in familiarity, a place where local neighbors find their way regularly, drawn both by the caliber of its offerings and the comfort of its environment. While the nature of charcoal grilling brings with it some smoky warmth that clings a bit, it also serves as a reminder that this is a space rooted in tradition — where the imperfections only add to the authenticity of the experience.

Really liked the food. The happy hour menu was priced so you can enjoy many items. The meats were marinated well, and you get the experience of grilling your own food. The atmosphere is typical. The location is convenient if you live in the local area. The only reason this is a 4/5 is because the ventilation didn’t seem all that well (perhaps just our table?). It was smokier than what I’ve typically experienced. I’d still recommend this place to a fellow patron because the food was tasty.

Walked in without reservation on a Saturday. Thankfully they sat me. Good meat. Good price. Ventilation needs to be better. They may be slightly understaffed but was a good overall experience.

Yamaya Japanese Wagyu & Grill is a Japanese yakiniku specialist in the Torrance area. Ventilation is not bad, but expect to get smelly. The dimly lit dining room is clean and tidy. Servers are friendly, professional and accommodating. Corkage is US$ 25/btl. Food is fresh and of great quality. While side dishes such as Moyashi Namui (US$4.8) and Green Salad ($5.8) are refreshing, the different cuts of wagyu are simply delicious! Highly recommend the crunchy Chef’s Cut Tongue (US$42.8), the juicy Premium Short Ribs (US$ 34.8) and Outside Skirt (US$ 29.8).

The best meats of any Japanese BBQ I've ever been to. Real wygu meats, and the others are still very top notch. I'm so happy to have found this place nearby! The best meats without a stuffy atomophere.

Yamaya is an outstanding place to try Japanese style beef. I had lunch here, we tried the washu beef combo and one of the specials (a rib eye called "supersteak"). Everything was super fresh. The service were helpful and attentive. The best part, was lunch wasn't too expensive (although I saw dinner could be much more).
